Widespread and very common; O. rubrescens (along with O. haematopus) is the most abundant species in most lowland forests in the southwest Amazon. Most abundant in primary terra firme and floodplain forest; also common in second growth and bamboo; fairly common in early second growth, dry forest, river-edge forest, gaps and small clearings, tall weeds; occurs up to 1450 m
